Writing is a way to express ourselves and when reading the writing of others we sometimes connect with their words in a way that makes us feel like we know them.
We can also get the feeling that they understand us in return and as such their words can help us to feel less lonely. I know other peoples’ words have certainly done that for me many times in my life.
I used to write poetry as a child and poetry and essays for school as a teenager but have done little writing of any sort since then. It’s been almost thirty years.
My self consciousness has always been so strong that until recently I couldn’t write anything without agonising over how my potential audience may judge me.
I couldn’t even journal private thoughts, ever aware that someone may read them one day and, again, judge me harshly. This fear would stop me from being able to write altogether, no matter how hard I tried.
When I mentioned to a therapist about a year ago that I used to write poetry as a child she suggested I try writing again. I entertained the idea.
That night I woke from my sleep with the first few lines of a poem running through my head and surprisingly they stayed there until I could find a pen and my journal! And then out it came, almost word for word as it is now.
The next morning when I looked at it again, I realised that it had been there, inside of me my whole life. And now was the time to finally challenge, really challenge, my long-time fears and to shine.
So, at last, here I am writing for you! It is still hard and the words don’t come easily but I want to be able to share with you that you are able to overcome your fears, that you can do the things you think you cannot do.
You can let yourself be seen for who you really are, you can embrace all of your gifts and you can let the beautiful person that is you shine through!
If I can do it, so can you. It may take some time, patience, perseverance and lots of self-love but I believe in you. I believe you can do it.
And I’ll be here for you, cheering you on!
What is stopping you from being all of who you are?
Are you ready to share your unique and beautiful light with the world?
How do you think you could do this?
What could your next step be?
